Hello Friends
My husband nearly died last week. He narrowly avoided a head-on collision while travelling on the highway (doing 100 km per hour) when 2 vehicles suddenly pulled out from behind an oncoming semi-trailer flashing their headlights at him. He was forced (in a split second) to veer off the road. If he had delayed by only one second, he would have had a head-on crash and would likely been killed instantly. Why people do such idiotic things is unfathomable.
However, the end could come for any of us at any time. We don’t know when we may be involved in a traffic accident, when our hearts may stop, when an aneurism or stroke could happen, or when a terminal diagnosis of any kind may come our way. Although we all hope to live a long and healthy life, the reality is that this is not going to happen for everyone, and even if it does, our time to die will come. It is inevitable.
If you knew you were going to die in a month, would you live your life differently for your remaining time? Would you choose to speak more lovingly to your husband and children, would you choose to spend your free time being productive or wisely restful or would you waste that time on your phone, or pursuing things or interests that are not helpful. I am not suggesting we shouldn’t have hobbies or interests but rather am encouraging the wise use of our days.
Even more importantly, every one of us will give need to give an account of ourselves to God. How will I account for the wasted and profitless hours I have mindlessly scrolled through my phone, for the resentful and selfish ways I have acted, for the times I spoke impatiently to my children?
I am greatly encouraged by Philippians 3:13 which says, “…one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead”. Let us choose today to change our ways, to seek God for help, then use His help to be more like Him. Every time a negative or wrong thought comes to your mind, take it captive, cast it down, and CHOOSE to think and live the truth.
Choose to make this term of school a happy one in your home. Don’t magnify the hard days or the struggles. Choose to be a wise woman who builds her house, not one who tears it down with her own hands. Would you rather be remembered by your family and friends as a wise woman who trusted and obeyed God, or as a foolish woman who threw away her family away? We don’t need to worry about tomorrow or next week or next term. Take one day and each day at a time. Choose to do what is right and with a right attitude for the next 5 minutes, then the next 5 minutes and so on throughout the day. I challenge you, if your life is particularly difficult at the moment, to choose to follow God and obey Him. Leave the results in His hands and obediently and wisely build your home.
Wishing you all a wonderful week.
Until next time
Ruth
